Yancy Derringer is a gentleman adventurer. He is a former Confederate Officer who has returned to New Orleans, Louisiana, after the Civil War. Widely respected by all parts of New Orleans society, he is asked by the city administrator, John Colton, to work as an secret agent at no pay, and only John Colton knows of Yancy's special work for Colton's office.
In "A.Bullet.For.Bridget" an Irish girl visits New Orleans and decides that Yancy is to be her future husband.
